Recap of Short Term Rentals (STRs) & Quality of Life
Today our local panelists considered the impact of short-term rentals on the quality of life and housing affordability within our beach communities.
John Thickstun, Mandy Havlik and Kevin Hastings discussed taxes, services and the impact of STRs in San Diego in order to suggest amendments to an ordinance regulating STRs that is under consideration by the City Council.
Join the fight against illegal short-term rentals
John Thickstun spoke at today's meeting about how the Save San Diego Neighborhoods organization is working to ensure that the City of San Diego enforces rules about short-term rentals. John told the club that hotel and motel occupancy is at its lowest point in decades, causing workers to be laid off. Save San Diego Neighborhoods is fighting a city ordinance that would ease the process of using residential homes for short-term rentals.
Recall Councilmember Jennifer Campbell — recalljen.com
Panelist Mandy Havlik who was recently re-elected to the Peninsula Planning Board spoke on her own behalf about the negative impact of short-term vacation rentals on school enrollment and the provision of important city services. Mandy believes San Diego City Council President Jen Campbell is shepherding an ordinance that would ease residential conversion to short-term rentals and accelerate its negative impacts.
Panelist Kevin Hastings of the OB Planning Board encouraged, on his own behalf club, that club members support the recall of Jen Campbell as the most expedient way to reign-in short-term rentals. Kevin also compiled quality of life metrics about short-term rentals in San Diego City Council District 1 and 2 and is encouraging the City Council to consider those metrics in a second reading of a relevant ordinance on April 6.
Community proliferation of short-term rentals
Kevin Hastings spoke about the growing number of short-term rentals in the community and shared the above map of current listings. He mentioned that there are about 600 short-term vacation rentals on the Peninsula.
