When confronted by the forces of darkness, we can find strength in the light of determination and service that shines brightly from many in our own community.

This year the San Diego County Democratic Party’s annual awards are leaning into that light, showcasing several distinguished nominees for each category. You can view them all at sddems.link/awards.

From volunteers and elected officials to labor and business leaders, these champions inspire us with their vision, commitment, and hard work.

The actual awardees will not be announced in advance, but instead during the Roosevelt Dinner on Saturday, April 25. In keeping with dinner’s theme, “A New Hope for Democracy,” these individuals and organizations are among the changemakers, agitators, and activists powering our fight for the future.

Resolution in Support of Limiting and Regulating Short-term Vacation Rentals in the City of San Diego

WHEREAS, San Diego faces a severe housing shortage that has driven up rental and home prices, and the proliferation of short-term vacation rentals (STVRs) has removed thousands of housing units from the market that would otherwise be available for long-term residential use, further limiting our housing supply and deepening the housing crisis; and

WHEREAS, the conversion of homes into STVRs inflates property values and sales prices, as investors purchase homes for commercial short-term rental use rather than for residential occupancy, thereby increasing neighborhood housing costs and pricing out working families and long-term residents; and

WHEREAS, the loss of stable, long-term residents due to the expansion of STVRs undermines community cohesion, leading to hollowed-out neighborhoods, declining school enrollments, and the erosion of the social and economic fabric that sustains vibrant, livable communities;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Point Loma/ Ocean Beach Democratic Club supports policies that preserve and protect residential housing units for long-term residential use by limiting the number, density, and type of short-term vacation rentals permitted in the City of San Diego, ensuring that housing remains accessible and affordable for San Diego residents; such as increasing the minimum night stay to 10 days, and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Point Loma/ Ocean Beach Democratic Club urges the San Diego City Council and Mayor to strengthen enforcement of existing short-term rental regulations, prioritize the preservation of residential neighborhoods, and adopt comprehensive measures to prevent the displacement of long-term residents and promote stable, sustainable communities for current and future generations.

She’s a board member of the San Diego chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and has reported for the Watchdog team at the San Diego Union-Tribune from 2009 to 2012.

For television, she worked as an on-air reporter, investigative producer and assignment editor at NBC San Diego from 2013 to 2018 — where she helped launch an investigative team and Telemundo20, the Spanish language news station — before returning to print journalism, covering Mexico and Baja California for the Union-Tribune and the Los Angeles Times from 2018 to 2022.

Wendy won SPJ’s Sol Price Award for Responsible Journalism in 2012 for uncovering corruption among construction contractors and elected officials at the Sweetwater Union High School District, resulting in indictments of about a dozen public officials.

She also won the Grand Golden Watchdog Award from the San Diego County Taxpayers Association in 2017, for her coverage of dangerous levels of lead in water in the San Diego Unified and San Ysidro school districts. Sunday April 12 — Monthly Meeting — Sexual Assault Awareness Month with speaker Wendy Fry

Emmy-winning journalist, Wendy Fry, will speak on her investigation of Rape Reports at local ICE Detention Facility and how they are conducted. Such investigations are normally under the purview of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, but Sheriff Kelly Martinez has ceded that responsibility to the corporation running the facility, Core Civic Corporation through an MOU, citing insufficient staffing in her department to handle the workload.

She and her husband were fortunate to buy their Ocean Beach home before the short term rental boom caused housing prices to sky rocket in their community.

Cynara co-founded Housing for San Diegans so that her neighborhood and communities all over the city can continue to be accessible to her friends and peers.

Kip Eischen is past president of the Point Loma/ OB Democratic Club and works in the field of affordable housing in local municipal government. He is a native San Diegan and also a member of the Mission Beach Planning Board

Kip Eischen — San Diegans for Affordability (under formation)

Kip Eischen is past president of the Point Loma/ OB Democratic Club and works in the field of affordable housing in local municipal government. Together with others in forming San Diegans for Affordability, he has advocated for workforce housing solutions based on successes in other places like New York City and Coronado. He is a native San Diegan and also a member of the Mission Beach Planning Board

The morning of our endorsement consideration Josh Coyne’s campaign notified us that he would not be attending our meeting, they also failed to complete our candidate questionnaire that had been sent to all our Democratic candidates

Both Nicole Crosby and Mandy Havlik attended and answered a wide arrange of questions moderated by Dave Fisher, President.

Your active involvement was vital during our closed discussion session and all members present were then able to record their choices via their online ballots to add to those members who had voted but were unable to attend.

San Diego Unified School District Member, Board of Education District C

The San Diego County Democratic Party’s regional meeting (Metro West) will consider an endorsement for San Diego Unified School District Member, Board of Education District C on Monday, January 26 — and our club associate will vote for Hayden Gore at that meeting.

“Public education in the U.S. is under attack. Whether at the local, state or federal level, political and religious groups have pushed for funding cuts while diverting more money to private-school vouchers, trying to alter curricula and removing books from children’s reading lists. By not prioritizing free and equitable public education, the U.S. government is robbing our youths of the critical-thinking skills and knowledge that drive innovation and democracy.

Endorsement Consideration for San Diego Unified School District Member, Board of Education District C

The San Diego County Democratic Party’s regional meeting (Metro West) will consider endorsements for San Diego Unified School District Member, Board of Education District C on Monday, January 26.

Our regular monthly meeting is at the Pt Loma Assembly on Sunday January 25, 4PM and as such is too late for us to give adequate notice of our endorsement to local party officials.

But, the Executive Board of the local party came up with a solution and invited us to take part in a Candidate Forum on January 13 so we can still register our endorsement for this race on time.

The candidate forum is being organized with the Pacific Beach and La Jolla Democratic Clubs. As we vote on endorsements with electronic mail ballots you do not need to attend the forum to be able to vote, but it will give you a chance to hear from the candidate(s) and ask questions before you cast your ballot.

Get ready for some great events as we deliberate on elections crucial to our community. Your participation, insights and advocacy are invaluable in shaping our club endorsements.

Notice of Endorsement Consideration for San Diego Unified School District Member, Board of Education District C

The San Diego County Democratic Party’s regional meeting (Metro West) will consider endorsements for San Diego Unified School District Member, Board of Education District C on Monday, January 26.

Our regular monthly meeting is at the Pt Loma Assembly on Sunday January 25, 4PM and as such is too late for us to give adequate notice of our endorsement to local party officials.

But, the Executive Board of the local party has come up with a solution whereby we can take part in a Candidate Forum on January 13 and still register our endorsement for this race on time.

The candidate forum is being organized with the Pacific Beach and La Jolla Democratic Clubs. As we vote on endorsements with electronic mail ballots you do not need to attend the forum to be able to vote, but it will give you a chance to hear from the candidate(s) and ask questions before you cast your ballot.

Voting eligibility

To be eligible to vote in the club’s endorsement process, you need to be a registered Democrat and have attended one meeting after you became a member. In any year that you do not renew your membership on-time, which is by January 31, you become ineligible to vote until you renew your membership. If you renew your membership after March 31, you must attend a meeting before you are eligible to vote again.

If you are currently a member, where you renewed your membership between November 1, 2025 and now, you are likely eligible to vote in the endorsement process.

Reasons why you might not be eligible to vote include not attending a meeting since you became a member or not attending a meeting since you renewed late either this year or in a prior year.

Please renew your membership for 2026 in order to remain eligible to vote at our upcoming endorsement and general meetings. If you are unsure whether you renewed your membership for 2026 already, please contact membership chair Angela Hawkins at membership@pointlomadem.org.

• Get Flock out of our city and make sure they delete all of our data.

• Reject the new proposed ALPR policies. They fail to keep us safe, according to your own experts.

Talking Points

You’ll have 1 minute to speak when called at the City Council meeting. Your written public comment can be as long as you like because you can write and attach a file to your comment.

Suggested script:

Hi! My name is ________ and I live in district ____. (Find your district) I urge you to oppose continuing to use Flock ALPR systems in San Diego.

• There are many other options for helping solve crimes than Flock.

• San Diegans’ data should only exist here in San Diego, under the lock and key of San Diegans, and under the legal protections of our city.

• The experts on the Privacy Advisory Board have said to CEASE USE of Flock until 31 different protections are added, which includes GETTING A WARRANT TO SEARCH FLOCK DATA.

• San Diego’s surveillance laws do not exist to enable dangerous technology to stay on our streets. Our laws exist to empower city leaders like you to reject technology when it turns dangerous.

• Our city’s policies for Flock failed to prevent our data from illegally escaping our control, and they are failing to provide transparency on how Flock is used. Our protections from Flock are weak, not strong.

• Flock is part of the umbrella of dangerous mass surveillance technologies funded by Peter Thiel and being used by President Trump to ignore the law and violate the constitution.

• City leaders who vote for Flock are voting for Trump’s immigration raids and Trump’s future aggressions on groups he demonizes.

• It is undisputed that police have been sharing our ALPR data with federal agencies in direct violation of policy and California law. It is undisputed that federal agencies have accessed Flock data directly, to support federal immigration raids.

• Flock keeps information on our locations and photographs of our cars under their own the control of an irresponsible tech company. Flock makes me unsafe because:

• Tell your community’s story

• Is your community afraid to go to work? Afraid to go to protests, which is your Constitutional right? Afraid for family members vulnerable to ICE?

• What could happen if federal law enforcement gets this information?

• What could happen if out-of-state prosecutors get this information?

• How does this impact you and your loved ones?

• A vote for Flock is a vote for Trump’s allies. Flock is a Silicon Valley-style company with untrustworthy investors like Trump supporter Peter Thiel.

• Police in Texas performing a “death investigation” of a “nonviable fetus” used Flock to run a nationwide search for a woman who self-administered an abortion, and they discussed prosecuting the woman. Flock lied and claimed it was a missing person investigation.

• Flock is not a trustworthy company. Flock also disobeyed Evanston, Illinois and put up their cameras in the city after the City ordered the system shut down. Flock lied to Colorado government officials about having a pilot program with Customs and Border Patrol, giving them direct database access. Journalists had to discover the truth.

• My family, friends and community are hurting because of Trump’s rogue federal agents abducting people throughout San Diego. Flock enables this to happen and must be stopped to protect San Diegans.

• Your approval of this technology will mean that you Council are complicit in these abductions. There is no real way to protect our data from getting in the hands of federal immigration enforcement with Flock.

• City of San Diego has already demonstrated it cannot properly control the Flock system, which resulted in a data breach of our data in January 2024. No one has been held accountable for that data breach.

• I don’t trust a company that is innovating drones and creepy AI tools on innocent people’s data. Shut down Flock.

• The experts you appointed to the Privacy Advisory Board found a lot of problems with Flock and recommended that Flock use should CEASE. Stop collecting our data immediately, and take down Flock ALPR cameras in San Diego.

• No City or state policy can make Flock safe. Even if our city policies are strict, Flock is obligated to comply with court orders and subpoenas from the federal government. They told you this in June 2025.

• Flock is not invested in real public safety. Their responsibility to investors is to generate revenue per police officer. They have no economic incentive to create real safety.

• Cities across the country including Austin, Texas, Denver, Colorado, Oak Park Illinois, Sedona, Arizona and others have voted to reject Flock. It is time for San Diego to do the same.

WSWA is organizing their annual Toy Distribution to Parents for Their Children! WSWA urgently needs donations of 1,000 toys for this year’s distribution. Toys can be dropped off at WSWA’s office 7 days a week between 9am-9pm. Or bring to the Party!

WSWA prefers personal drop-offs at their office so they can show you what else they’re doing! (Easy parking in rear, just call when you arrive.)
